FOCAL visited the South Coast for a second year last weekend as a bijou but enthusiastic crowd descended on Bournemouth, presided over by the cheerful pairing of Jeff and Sean.

And when all was said and done, it was Tom Chafer-Cook who took his first title in his first final – congratulations Tom! What could have been for your FOCAL year if only you’d been able to hit a few more events…

Tim Down makes it back-to-back runner-up slots and cements his 9th place in the standings, on 344 points. Even with three events to go, the current Top 8 will do well to defend their positions, as no fewer than nine other players are on scores of at least 250 points. Kudos to T-Cap as well for picking up his second podium place of the year, coming in 3rd.

On the biggest climbers this time: Rob Foster’s two events so far this year have both been in August, and his 4th place finish at Bournemouth propels him now to 39th. Also picking up points for a second event of the year, Martin Thomas climbs 21 places with his respectable 7th place finish and moves up the Top 100 to 79th. And finally, the rarely-seen Robin McKay takes himself up 28 places to 70th, the biggest riser from this event. Congrats Robin!

The highest new entry this time comes from recent TV quarter-finalist Toby McDonald, cruising into the standings at 119th, after finishing 2nd in Group B. Indeed a creditable performance on the day, Toby – we hope to see a bit more of you at future events!

And with his victory at the weekend, Tom joins a rare group of players to have won their first final. He becomes only the third player to do so in the FOCAL era (2016-), after Stephen Read and most recently, Eddy Byrne at last year’s Lincoln Hangover. Others in between were Dylan Taylor, Rob Foster and Innis Carson.

We’ve now had 344 entries this year by 161 individuals (average attendance, 2.14 events per person). The average attendance is 34 – our average after 10 events last year was 36, but we’ve had exactly the same number of individuals. So, this speaks of stability, but not yet growth, which means we iterate what we’ve said before – if you think you know anyone who might like to come and give FOCAL a go, tell them about it and bring them along!

Just a three week gap to our next event and we move from South to North, as James Robinson brings us back to his very own terrier firma in Huddersfield. I’m hoping to make it there, and so I’ll be hoping to see some of you there too. Good luck Robbo!
