After years of being one of FOCAL’s most consistently strong players, Bradley Horrocks finally claimed his first co:event title with a day-long masterclass in Blackpool.
Host Mark welcomed 55 eager anagrammers to his hometown and Blackpool proved to be a great host town for the eventgoers with plenty of entertainment on hand. On the eve of the tournament, one group attended a Funny Girls show whilst another visited the Mayfield sports bar, venue for the last Blackpool event in 2019.
After a Friday night of festivities, nine Countdowners took on the picturesque Blackpool parkrun at Stanley park (Adam joined us after the below photograph was taken!)
The line-up for the event featured some big names with local favourite Jack, former FOCAL champion Rob, reigning ZoomDown champion Elliott, and current FOCAL league leader Eddy just some of the heavyweights in the fray. There were also a few newbies who greatly enjoyed their first event.
After everyone had played six games each, last season’s FOCAL finals runner-up Bradley was the only player to have won every game. He was joined in the final by Newcastle 2019 champion James Haughton, who had the highest points total of the few players who managed five out of six heat wins.
While James put in a respectable performance in the final, he was no match for Bradley who carried his imperious form into the crunch match and secured a very strong win to finally claim some FOCAL silverware. A very deserved triumph that had been coming for a long time.
After the event, a few groups of eventgoers headed out for food and drink, culminating at Gaiety’s karaoke bar where several of them took to the stage, most notably with a rousing rendition of ‘Yes Sir I Can Boogie’ from Steven Grady.
Finally, for those who could hang around a little longer before heading home on Sunday, Mark organised a trip to the amusements for his Sunday Funday feature. After a bit of donky derby (on which Tom of course won an overlarge stuffed tiger), a few games of air hockey were enjoyed by all.
It had been a long wait for mainland UK-based Countdowners to have a FOCAL event they could attend, but it was worth it as Mark’s Blackpool event delivered a full weekend of fun for everyone.
While we don’t yet have any more events formally confirmed for the remainder of 2021, please keep checking back at the FOCAL website and social media channels for news as we’re hoping to get an event or two over the line before December. Failing that, we hope to have the legendary COLIN event in Lincoln to look forward to in January 2022. Stay tuned!
