Jack’s magic bears fruit in Brighton

Brighton 2022: Paul Zenon has an Ace a Jack up his sleeve!

Our latest event took place on the South Coast last weekend as 39 players took part in the inaugural Co:Brighton tournament hosted by Fiona and Lesley.

Those arriving early on the day before the event headed to Lesley’s confectionery to help out producing some of the vegan goodies at Jeavons Toffee, while others took in a Women’s Euros football match at the nearby Amex Stadium.

Brighton 2022: Fiona, Tom, and Adam help out making the sweet treats

On Saturday, after some parkrunning at two of Brighton’s local courses, it was time for the anagramming to begin. There was a strong field of competitors in attendance including our recent Galway champion James Robinson.

In the six heat games it was Jonny D who proved to be the man in form as he went undefeated with a perfect record of 6 wins. It was to be Jonny’s first ever FOCAL event final, although he has previously reached the final of the Mind Sport Olympiad event.

Brighton 2022: Finalists Jack and Jonny face off

His opponent would be Countdown legend Jack Hurst, who would be hoping for a better result from his second FOCAL final this year, having been defeated by Jack Worsley in Manchester in February.

And while Jonny carried momentum into the final, having already beaten Jack earlier in the day, this time it was Jack who took the victory when it really mattered to seal his first FOCAL event title since Bristol 2016! You can watch the final below:

Jack and the other prizewinners were presented with their trophies by Brighton Fringe regular and Countdown favourite Paul Zenon.

After another succesful event, it was time to hit the pub! On this occasion, the pub in question was Brighton’s famous World’s End Arcade pub, where our Countdowners enjoyed racing games and vegan food. Elsewhere throughout the weekend some found time for escape rooms and snooker; there really was a lot to do in Brighton this weekend. Thank you to Fiona and Lesley for superbly hosting an excellent event.

What next?

Jack’s win in Brighton was enough to put him right on the doorstep of the all-important Top 8 for the season, meaning he is surely just one more good performance away from qualifying for the Finals in our year-end event in Milton Keynes this November.

One person he might be facing there is Tim Hebbes, whose run of consistent finishes has seen him break into the Top 8 at a new personal best position of 6th place. Another consistent finisher, George, is leapfrogged by Tim but overtakes T-Cap to maintain his 7th place in the table.

Our next event from which Top 8 hopefuls (and everyone else!) can score points is in BIRMINGHAM on Saturday 13th August. We hope to see you there!

But if not we also have events remaining in Blackpool, Edinburgh, and Braintree before the aforementioned Finals event in Milton Keynes, which also has an Open divison so everyone can take part. Have a look at our Upcoming Events page to see which events take your fancy.
