We’re delighted to have Blackpool on the FOCAL circuit for a second year running — and what better time of year than Illuminations season in the autumn!
There are lots of hotels to choose from, and getting around Blackpool is easier than ever. Not only is the ticketing integrated for buses and trams, the trains now operate directly into Blackpool North from London Euston as part of the West Coast Main Line network.
Getting to the venue
From Blackpool North station, walk to the bus stop in Market Street for the number 7 bus towards Clifton Hospital. There are three buses an hour on a Saturday morning. It’s a 40-minute ride to the south of the town, past the Airport, then a short walk at the other end to The Mayfield. Check www.blackpooltransport.com for full details (search Blackpool North Station to postcode FY8 2DR).
You can buy a 1-hour ticket on your phone for £3.20 or a 24-hour ticket for £5.25, valid from the time at which you activate it on your phone.
How the tournament works
Blackpool is a Lincoln-style event. Three rounds of games across the day, with three players to a table in each round. One person hosts/adjudicates while the other two play and pick their letters and numbers in turn.
So you play twice and host once in each round, which means you’ll play six games and host three altogether. (For more details, see ‘How do you play?’ here.)
A Grand Final between the top two players in the table will play out in front of its audience sometime after 5pm, followed by prize giving and closedown by 6pm.
Refreshments and lunch
A buffet lunch is included in the entry fee, as is tea/coffee in the morning. The bar will open at 12pm. If anyone has any special dietary needs then please let us know — all will be catered for, but will need to know in advance.
We also will hold a quiz during the lunch break, which we expect will be at around 1:30pm.
You can secure your place for £10 through PayPal to Mark Mills. Please remember to select the “family/friends” option, as your contribution is voluntary to help cover Mark’s personal costs of organising the event.
Mark has booked a karaoke DJ from 8pm, so let’s have some fun and stay after the tournament with great value drinks and singing. Takeaway delivery can also be arranged and you’re welcome to eat in the venue.
Sunday fun at The Pleasure Beach
Fancy a day out on the prom? With enough interest among attendees, Mark is looking to organise a group booking at The Pleasure Beach for the Sunday 13th. Let us know if you’d like more information.
