HAVE YOU MISSED US??
James Robinson is back with yet another FOCAL Countdown tournament in Huddersfield and, by popular demand, with arch nemesis Callum Todd from Leeds.
Once again, we’re at PPG Canalside, Huddersfield Town’s training complex just up the Leeds Road from the stadium (HD2 1YJ). It is a fully modern, up-to-date facility and ready to cope with the hustle and bustle of a FOCAL event. Car parking is free. Take a look for yourselves, just here: http://www.canalsidesports.com.
This event uses the “Bristol” classroom format, where contestants play in pairs with the virtual graphics on our big screen, and everyone gets a chance to call the consonants and vowels during the day!
We aim to rerun our groups-of-four (or possibly six) setup to decide who plays who in the heats. Assuming we get 32 entrants, players will be drawn at random into eight groups, to play three heats matches. This means players will know at the start who they will be up against in the heats. These will be 9-round matches, as per the old television format (6L 2N 1C).
At the end of the three heats, everyone is ranked in their group in order of total wins, points scored and +/- points difference, and put into divisions of eight for the quarter-finals. The winner from each heats group automatically goes into Division A, the runner-up into Division B, third place into C and fourth place into D.
From here, everybody is seeded within their divisions to play a 9-round quarter-final, a 9-round semi-final and a 14-round final (8L 4N 2C). This will be done in Swiss format, so everybody will get to play right until the end of the day.
The two finalists in Group A will sit out the mainstream final, to play our showpiece Grand Final at around 5pm. So if you don’t make the top two, why not recharge your glass, sit back and enjoy!
This event takes place on Saturday 8 September — doors open at 9:45am for a prompt 10:45am start, finishing at around 6pm. The admission price is set at £15 and includes a hot buffet lunch at 1pm. The cash bar will be available too.
For any enquiries, please phone James on 07817 750 544.
As at July 2018, the following options are available across the weekend (Friday/Saturday/Sunday), depending on your budget:
– National Express are offering seats on coach journeys between London Victoria Coach Station and Huddersfield for £5;
– LNER‘s website is showing single rail tickets between London Kings Cross and Huddersfield (with one change in Leeds) for £30;
– Grand Central runs direct trains between London Kings Cross and nearby Mirfield, which are selling for as little as £16 single, and from there, catch Arriva bus 203 from Mirfield Station to Leeds Road in Huddersfield which takes around 25 minutes.
Make a weekend of it! There is a Travelodge on the Leeds Road in Huddersfield (TripAdvisor rating 4.5), almost halfway between the town centre/railway station and our Canalside venue. Parking is also free. There is no café/bar in this Travelodge, but there is a Costa just next door, or alternatively breakfast bags can be ordered from reception up to the night before.
Dinner on the Saturday evening is usually at the Yorkshire Rose pub, again just next to the Travelodge, which have catered for our larger groups in the past and which serves a wide range of meals, drinks and desserts.
We look forward to having you join us up in West Yorkshire!!!
